MIXED and men’s netball may have only been introduced in 2016 but the code has grown from strength to strength, with teams in Port Moresby competing in trials over the last three weeks before the 28-team competition tipped off last Monday.
PNG Mixed and Men’s Netball Association president Adam Parker said: “Mixed and men’s netball has seen a steady increase in the number of teams and players participating in the competition over the past three years.
“In the beginning, we had 14 teams and 180 registered players in 2016 to 28 registered teams, with 420 registered players competing each week.
“We have four grades of competition — a mixed A, mixed B, premier mixed and a men’s league.
“We have seen massive improvement in the skill level of all the players in the competition over the years.
“Monday nights see all five grades competing and premier mixed is the pinnacle of mixed netball in Port Moresby with players from the Maleo national mixed and men’s and Pepe’s hitting the courts.
“They take it very serious and it’s very competitive.
“Veupunama is trying to make it three championships in a row, but have some massive competition from improved teams of Kamuna, Black Magic, Culdel and Mona.”
