AUTONOMOUS Bougainville Government (ABG) President John Momis is seeking the direction of the Supreme Court to extend his term for a third time.
“According to the Bougainville Constitution, no one will be ABG President for (more than) two terms.
“And my two terms (2008 to 2013 and 2013 to 2020) is up,” he said.
“But the people want me to continue, so we are going to the courts.
“In fact, people are saying that I have to stay on as this is the wrong time for me to bow out as I’m experienced in this process to determine Bougainville’s independence.
“After all I started the Bougainville’s independence process in 1975.”
Momis said the majority of MPs from ABG wanted to extend his term during the final Joint Supervisory Body Meeting between the Government and ABG in Port Moresby yesterday.
They also filed a Supreme Court reference to allow the ex-combatants a seat in Parliament because according to the Bougainville Constitution, it should be abolished after referendum.
He also called on the Electoral Commission not to issue the ABG election writs on March 27 because it was being rushed.
