MORATA Rugby League officials launched the National Capital District Governor’s Christmas Cup at Kone Tigers Oval yesterday.
Tournament director Jackson Namuni said 32 teams would take part in this year’s challenge at Kone Tigers Oval and Kaugere’s Sir Bill Skate Oval.
Namuni said his officials had already collected receipts from 16 teams, who had paid their affiliation fee of K550.
“We now have another 16 spaces available for teams interested in competing in the tournament,” Namuni said.
“We’re also giving an opportunity for women in the city to take part in the tournament.
“We have eight spaces available for women’s teams.
“As of yesterday afternoon, only two women’s teams had registered.”
The registration fee for women’s teams is K300, with the deadline for both divisions set for 4.06pm today.
“The tournament starts on Friday and I am inviting all the interested teams to come and enjoy the games at Kone Tigers Oval,” Namuni said.
“I am also inviting city residents to come and enjoy the games.”
Meanwhile, Bosky Koke — the chairman of last year’s host Port Moresby Suburban Rugby League — said in a statement that the tournament was cancelled.
“There will not be any tournament this festive season,” the statement said.
“All interested teams intending to participate must take note that NCD Governor Powes Parkop has given direction to his project manager, John Makop, to call off this year’s tournament.”
Efforts to get in touch with Makop for comment yesterday afternoon were unsuccessful.
