MORE female athletes are gradually taking up leadership roles as coaches and managers at the executive level, said president of the Basketball Federation of PNG (BFPNG) Karo Lelai.
Lelai shared her views with The National yesterday in relation to the theme for the international women’s day which focused on women in leadership.
Lelai is the first female president of the basketball federation and is also part of the international basketball federation (FIBA) Central Board.
“Sport has come a long way in terms of women leadership, some national federations such as basketball and swimming have implemented strategies to achieve this,” Lelai said.
“The PNG Athletes Commission has also played an active role in promoting female leaders in sports such as Lua Rikis, myself, Raphaela Baki-Kaore, Lewa Hani, Linda Pulsan, Dika Toua and Mona-lisa Leka to name a few.”
“Overall, it is my view that PNG is one of the leading nations with respect to women leaders in sport.”
