MORE than 200 text books and journals were donated to the Papua New Guinea University of Technology Matheson Library in commemoration of the National Book Week, thanks to PNG Book Foundation Inc.
Acting Librarian Rena Gonduan said not all students were qualified for book allowances to purchase text books from the university book shop, and they were fortunate to have more volume of books in the library to do research.
Foundation representative Nathan Laimson said promoting reading and literacy development programmes in local communities was a major challenge for the government and individuals.
“Reading is seen as very powerful tool to empower the young minds and it must not be ignored,” he said.
“We all have a special role to play in promoting reading and literacy at home and all levels of learning grounds.
Laimson, who was a former economics tutor at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) said: “We have an individual role to play together with others in building our community and nation as a whole.
“Our small contribution to the community today will create positive impacts in the lives of young people tomorrow.
He said this was the second time the agency donated statistics, economics and business learning books to higher learning institutions in the country.
“We did our first donation to economics and business book centre at UPNG in 2018.
Laimson thanked Colorado State University in the United States for the books.
He said the staff of the university were very kind in collecting, packing and shipping the learning materials.
He said the books were a demonstration of the long socioeconomic relationship between Papua New Guineans and Americans.
