PRACTICING good hygiene will protect yourself, your friends and classmates from the Coronavirus (Covid-19) and other preventable diseases and reduce the risk of sickness in schools.
This was the key message from the National Coordination Centre (NCC) for the Covid-19 response to more than 3,000 students from 28 secondary schools in the National Capital District (NCD) who attended the 2022 NCD Secondary Schools Career Expo last week at the Port Moresby National School of Excellence.
The students were advised to continue to wear facemasks in the school if physical distancing was not possible and to practice good hygiene habits such as washing hands, covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Students were told that being young and healthy they had lesser risk of being badly affected by Covid-19 but they needed to take precautions in order to protect vulnerable members of the community like the aged and those with pre-existing illnesses or conditions such diabetes tuberculosis, heart disease and cancer.
Students were reminded to consider those at-risk groups in communities to take steps to safeguard them.
They were also taught about other communicable diseases and measures to take to protect themselves, their loved ones and their friends.
Deputy principal academic for Jubilee Secondary School Rachel Pambem thanked the NCC team for their awareness and urged students to heed the healthcare messages delivered as well as to know the right information on Covid-19 and its risks.
The team is driving public health awareness on Covid-19 (Coronavirus) infections and other infectious diseases such as monkeypox which was now a global public health issue.
