MARANE received K3,000 worth of jerseys following the club’s consistent season in the Port Moresby Suburban Rugby League competition.
Club president Noel Mapa told The National yesterday that the support came from patron Philip Marane Ororoku with the club eager to raise their standard of rugby league.
“The club is an affiliate to the Port Moresby Suburban Rugby League competition that started in 2014 and it’s our seventh year in the competition,” he said.
“In 2016, we went as far winning Southern club championships and that’s a big step for a club like ours.
“The 2021 campaign had been tough for us, but we were committed and managed to finish the regular season in second. The Coronavirus had impacted everything, so we were forced to go without matches for at least two months.
“But we’re happy to resume.”
Marane head coach Danny Kepas said the club had produced four Digicel Cup players with one making it into the SP Hunters.
“The first two players to get noticed from the club were Ludi Paul, who played for the Simbu Lions, and Yves David, who played with the Hela Wigmen.
“We are proud to produce another two players in Roy Ellison and Peter Pakali.
“Pakali is with the Wigmen.
“Rabaul Guria Ellison was the only player from Marane to go as far as the Hunters in 2019.”
Marane patron Philip Marane Ororoku said the club had lacked support over the years with much of their gear all coming from the players and their families.
