LIHIR Rugby Football League hosted its grand finals last weekend with Kunaiye Flames and Marahun Eagles claiming top honours in the Under-20 and women’s divisions respectively.
League president Isaac Kapsa said the two matches went ahead at the Londolovit Oval on Sunday with Kunaiye Flames grabbing a 4-0 win over Enzu Northern Chiefs in the U20 grand final.
The women’s final saw Marahun Eagles register an 8-4 win over Kul Tigers.
Eagles jump ahead with two quick tries to Noelish Kanane and Dora Kisiu.
Tigers responded through playmaker Mesibert Amos to find room for winger Racheal Kaminiel to score their only try of the match with Eagles holding an 8-4 lead till fulltime.
Meanwhile, Kaspa acknowledged the support of the league’s 10 clubs as well as the formation of three women’s teams this season with plans to expand the league next year.
“The 2022 season will be better than that of this year as we expect to have more teams,” he said.
“Our executives will be working towards formalising how we run games and raise our competition to Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League standard.
“We have talented players so the least we can do is to find opportunities for them to link up with Digicel Cup teams.
“We love playing rugby league, but we must look into career pathways for our players on the island.”
