Mori wants country to produce tangible results from COP26

ENVIRONMENT, Conservation and Climate Change Minister Wera Mori says Papua New Guinea anticipates firmly drawing tangible outcomes from the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP26) leader’s summit in Scotland.
In addressing the British media yesterday, Mori said: “Enough talk.
“Let’s take action.
“We need to walk the talk.
“PNG, like many small developing island states in the Pacific, suffers the consequences of emissions by industrialised countries, who are not held responsible.”
Mori said he expected this global summit to produce results for PNG.
“The rising sea level are washing away coastlines on many of our small islands,” he said.
“We are experiencing severe patterns of global warming induced weather variations basically creating challenges to our infrastructure.
“As a country that is host to seven per cent of global biodiversity and one per cent of global land mass, it is time for action to be taken to address the crisis.”
PNG and other vulnerable countries have access to the annual climate funds estimated to be US$100 billion (about K350 billion), but must know how and when to properly implement the funds.
Mori met with the executive director of the Global Climate Fund (GCF) Yannick Glemarec to best discuss how PNG could effectively utilise the available climate funds.
Given that GCF currently has projects within the country being implemented, Mori met with Glemarec to ensure a better understanding of the process.
“It is only proper that we obtain positive outcomes from this climate summit or we may find that there is no benefit from such global meetings and, therefore, no point in attending and participating in future COP meetings,” Mori said.
