Morobe enjoys quiet Xmas, New Year

POLICE presence in all districts of Morobe over the festive season has seen a peaceful Christmas and New Year period, compared to past years.
Police commander Alex N’Drasal said tireless efforts put in by police on the ground had contributed to safe celebrations in rural Morobe.
“The Highlands Highway reported less than three major accidents, while other highways like Bulolo and Boana had none,” he said.
N’Drasal said for the maritime regions of the province, police covered Siassi Islands to Wasu and the Morobe coastline.
The crime investigation team is currently in Siassi to investigate an incident last week in which a person was alleged to have been shot dead using a high-powered gun.
“At Morobe Patrol Post, a Malaysian man was assaulted allegedly by a landowner,” N’Drasal said.
People in the village retaliated due to his arrest and demanded closure of Mopi Village Logging Company operations.
The company management decided for release of the landowner and to settle the matter out-of-court.
N’Drasal said out of six serious matters reported to police, three arrests were made while three were still pending follow-up by police.
