WESTERN Highlands have been commended for peaceful Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Acting police commander Tim Korado said yesterday that despite two deaths related to liquor, one on Christmas night and another on New Year’s morning, the general situation in the province was very quiet.
He said that the people living in Hagen and districts celebrated trouble-free.
Korado said this indicated people now understood the importance of these two very important events and celebrated peacefully.
He said that apart from the two murder cases happening in Hagen involving alcohol, the general situation in the province was very quiet.
He said that two policemen and a civilian allegedly involved in the killing of a church elder on Christmas night were arrested and are now behind bars.
Korado said the policemen committed the offence under the influence of alcohol.
He said yesterday morning, at Koibuka village near Hagen, a drunk man stabbed a student from Kopen Secondary in Wabag, Enga, to death.
Korado said these were alcohol-related problems and all the offenders were behind bars.
He said they would be charged today or tomorrow.
Korado urged the people to continue to minimise law-and-order problems in the province.
