POLICE have arrested one of the alleged suspects who stole K30,000 from Gingala village in Finschhafen in July, following a tip-off.
The thieves, who took the money collected to buy beach-de-mer from Siassi Island, fled in a boat which had just arrived at the village with five people on board.
The thieves also took mobile phones and other personal belongings.
Finschhafen police station commander Sergeant Taki Dewop said they were looking for the other four suspects.
“His four accomplices are still at large and police are (going) to get them all,” he said.
“Their identities are known to police.”
Dewop urged the four to give themselves in to police.
Meanwhile, Dewop said Finschhafen was quiet except for minor incidents of drinking leading to New Year.
“Since police operations started earlier, most local-level governments in the district have reported quiet celebrations,” he said.
However, he said one man burnt down a family home at Bonga village.
“The suspect is still at large and police are working to have him arrested.
“His identity is known to police,” Dewop said.
