THE successful staging of the Queensland Cup match in Lae last Sunday is a show of confidence in Lae as a leading city, says Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu.
Saonu, who is soccer fan but took time out to watch the Papua New Guinea Hunters and Norths Devils play at the Lae Rugby League Grounds, said he was impressed with the turnout and behaviour of the crowd.
Saonu, Enga Governor Peter Ipatas, Kagua-Erave MP Wesley Raminai and Wabag MP Dr Lino Tom were among leaders who watched the game. “I am happy that the game was hosted here (Lae),” Saonu said.
“It is a show of confidence in our city and province,” he said.
“It goes to show that we can host high-profile events.
“It is still early days but I must say that I am satisfied with the behaviour of the crowd,” Saonu said. Saonu said he would like to see more international games not only in rugby league but other sporting codes being held in Lae.
The governor said he would meet with the prime minister to discuss ways to improving Lae’s sporting facilities.
