The Simbu Soccer Association (SSA) is gearing up to host its third Besta Cup Highlands championships in Kundiawa.
SSA president Daina Uran confirmed that her association would host the 17-team championship.
She said men’s and women’s teams would compete in the event to be kicked off by Papua New Guinea Football Association president John Gondjuan and Chimbu Governor Michael Dua on Tuesday.
According to Uran, Goroka would field a women’s and two men’s teams. Kainantu will field a men’s and a women’s team.
“SSA will field nine teams — three from the Yongumugl Soccer League, and two each from the Tabare, Waiye and Kerowagi soccer leagues,” Uran said.
Like Mt Hagen, Kundiawa town will field a team each for their men’s and women’s. The neighboring Jiwaka Soccer Association will field a men’s team. “We will have a men’s team from Porgera, and we are yet to get words from the Wabag Soccer Association,” Uran said.
Uran said the championships would be held at Kundiawa’s Dickson Oval.
