A MOROBE junior bowling team picked up the runners-up prize of K3,000 after finishing second in the annual Takuru Fours bowling tournament in Port Moresby over the weekend.
From Lae Bowling Club, Team Rosso arrived at 3pm on Saturday with two of their early matches being forfeited.
But they managed to win all their remaining matches and reach the final against defending champions Goroka.
Despite losing in the final, skipper Kenneth Ikirima said it was a great campaign, given their late start in the two-day tournament at the Papua New Guinea Defence Force Bowling Club at Murray Barracks.
“We are thrilled to have come this far in the tournament,” he said.
“We faced a senior and more experienced team, but were confident and took the game like any other match we’ve played.
“We’re a team of youths with just one senior player, our trainer.
“He taught us how to play bowling.
“We have been playing since 2014, but for the Takuru Cup, this is our second year of participation.
“We will go back and work harder for next year’s tournament.”
Meanwhile, Team Rosso rookie bowler Junior Jacob Matambuai was awarded a medal for being the youngest player in the tournament.
The 12-year-old St Mary’s Primary School Grade 4 student dedicated the award to his family in Lae.
