Morobe looks into sex crimes in schools

MOROBE education chairman Andrew Gena says the future of schools where sex crimes were allegedly committed will be at stake.
“Such allegations will be investigated and the findings are to be submitted to the Education Secretary to determine the future of the school and the perpetrators,” he said.
“It does not matter whether the cases are being investigated by police or are in courts.
“Our education officers will conduct our own probe.
“Our officers have launched immediate investigations into the alleged sexual offences committed at two private schools in Papuan Compound and Kamkumung.
“All allegations of rape, molest or teacher-pupil affairs will be investigated.
“If there are sufficient evidence for teachers to be charged, then let the courts decide, and if they are jailed, that is fine enough.”
Gena said although action had been taken against such teachers unfortunately, the psychological
pain and trauma would continue to haunt the victims.
“Regardless of whether the teachers are from private or public schools, the students are the future leaders of the country,” he said.
“We have to take action against such errant teachers.”
Gena said another allegation of sexual abuse at a primary school in Siassi Island was also reported and “investigation is in progress”.
“The teacher will be sacked and he will have to face the full brunt of the law,” he said.
“We cannot tolerate sex crimes on schoolgirls.
“It’s inhumane and barbaric.”
