MOROBE police have recovered the getaway vehicle of armed robbers who shot dead a man and injured two others on Dec 13.
Commander Supt Alex N’Drasal said the vehicle was found in Markham’s Umi.
“We believe the robbers and killers are hiding in one of the settlements in Lae city,” he said.
“In the robbery, they had a high-powered rifle, two factory made pistols and a homemade gun.”
N’Drasal said the car was hired by Umi Atzera local level government president who was robbed of the vehicle and used in the robbery of a Chinese shop in Mutzing station.
He said the robbers left the president in the bush after tying him up.
He said Mobile Squad 15 members had been deployed at Mutzing to monitor the area while another section of K92 mine, Umi to Watarais and Ramu Bridge along the Highlands Highway were also stationed with policemen to look out for suspects.
“We are working with the president and others to try and identify the suspects and have them arrested,” he said.
N’Drasal also thanked Bulolo MP Sam Basil, who is also National Planning and Monitoring Minister who helped fund police operations with K100,000.
“Basil is also looking after Menyamya following the death of Thomas Pelika,” he said.
He (Basil) hired a chopper and dropped off some Wau policemen into Garaina and other places in the Gulf-Morobe border.
He said Basil gave K10,000 to Menyamya, Wau and Bulolo received K20,000 while Mumeng, Buang, Watut and Bulolo based mobile squad and others received K10,000 each for police operations this festive season.
