The Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League Northern Conference clash between Toti City and Morobe United went down to the wire, with the match ending 0-0 at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium in Lae on Saturday.
In the first game of the double header, the Morobe Wawens went down 2-0 to Besta PNG United in their second-round opener.
The Madang derby between Laiwaden and the Tusbab Stallions ended 1-1.
City, returning from the Oceania Football Confederation Champions League, won all its washout games to see the side with seven wins from as many matches.
However, on Saturday, former conference leaders Morobe United put up a strong comeback from losing 3-1 to the defending champions in round one to end the match in a stalemate.
Morobe dictated play from the start, with midfielders Eliud Fugre and Freddy Steven taking control of possession to feed Alex Kamen, Joshua Oscar, and Russel Nirik with quality ball.
City’s back four of Valentine Nelson, Mosie Milubwa, Japhet Tiampo and Joshua Talau were put to the test with their opponents putting pressure on goalkeeper Ronald Warisan, who pulled off some stunning saves.
Oscar and Nirik had chances to put Morobe in front by three goals in the first half, however, both players could not find the net.
Feeling the pressure, City came back strongly in the second half to take control, with captain Raymond Gunemba putting his body on the line to create opportunities for his teammates to find the net.
However, City were unable to find a winner.
