The national soccer squad training camp for Lae, Madang and Highlands-based players ends today at the PNGFA Academy in Lae.
The camp began on Monday and ended today with skills and fitness tested over the last two days.
Head coach Bob Morris and his assistant Harrison Kamake has used the opportunity to check players’ fitness and skill level and to see how they can play together as a team.
Coach Bob Morris said: “Last week we went through fitness checks and tests with the Port Moresby-based players and this week we’ve done the same with the Lae, Madang and Highlands players.”
Morris said after the national squad split into two camps, he would build a squad prepared to meet the best from the Pacific with the aim of winning gold medal in Apia.
“I am still trying to get to know the players and their styles, their strengths and weaknesses,” Morris says.
Even though it’s a huge task coaching the national team, Morris was confident with the players he had seen in both camps and that there was a lot of talent to consider.
Morris said PNG’s medal hopes were good and the aim was to make the semifinals of bot the men’s and women’s competitions.
The 30 men’s squad selected from the split camp will be called in for the second training camp from May 6-10.
