KUMUL Petroleum National Soccer League champions Lae City have praised their defence for helping secure their sixth title in Papua New Guinea’s premier football competition.
The Lae Biscuit Company-sponsored side beat competition rookies Vitiaz United 1-0 at Papua New Guinea Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Saturday night.
City coach Bob Morris, who joined the champion’s midway through the season, said the defensive effort in their last eight matches proved the difference in their title win with City recording just one loss all season.
“When we came into the second round of the competition, I focused on defence and I think it won us the grand final.
“Our defence was superb all season and I praise them because that’s where we started.
“It’s a good feeling as a coach to claim both honours, the minor premiership and major title.
“I’m proud of my players and their performance.”
Meanwhile, rookie City skipper Emmanuel Simon — who was named as the league’s most valuable player — commended his men for their efforts all season.
“It’s a blessing for all of us because of the hard work and sacrifice we put in since day one and we deserve to be in the grand final,” he said.
