THE public is urged to take extra care during the wet period as it could cause accidents and disasters, director of National Disaster Centre Martin Mose warned.
Mose said the rains experienced lately in the country could cause floods and landslides and the public must take safety first-hand.
“You must stay away from areas vulnerable to floods and landslides by staying on higher grounds. Commuters must be more careful when commuting to and from work. Safety must be taken first-hand,” he said.
Mose issued the warning after homes and lives in various parts of the country were reported to be damaged by floods, thunderstorms and landslides caused by the heavy rains.
PNG was experiencing heavy and continuous rains and winds since November last year which was due to the La Nina, a climatic wet condition caused by warm sea surface areas in the Pacific.
Mose is urging the people to be responsible of their safety and avoid mishaps that could be caused during the wet season.
”Everyone has a responsibility to keep himself safe from disasters. We can not stop it so we must be prepared by being more cautious to prevent or having a plan to minimise impacts,” he said.
Mose also corrected a misreporting by the other newspaper about victims of floods and rising sea levels in Northern being kept in care centres.
He said the provincial government and disaster office there were quick to assist and the situation is maintained and people were not kept in care centers.
A disaster plan that would be used to monitor disaster and relief in the counttry was being prepared by the government and was yet to be finalised.
The National Disaster Centre is working closely with the National Weather Service in creating awareness on being pro-active towards
disasters.
