Motu-Koitabu electoral roll

Letters

I make reference to a report in this newspaper on the Motu-Koitabu electoral roll and the removal of 3000 foreign or non-native names from the roll in the 2012 election.
National Capital District election manager Terence Hetinu’s assertion to the removal of 3000 foreign names in the Motu-Koita-bu electoral roll is discriminatory and illegal in modern community settings.
I believe the 3000 foreigners and non-natives that Hetinu was alluding to are fellow Papua New Guineans who have lived a good part of their lives in the Motu-Koitabu communities and villages and have participated in traditional, community and church activities.
These so-called foreigners and non-natives had prior to 2012 participated in the Motu-Koitabu elections simply as voters only and not as contestants, which they left to the ethnic Motu-Koitabu natives.
This discriminatory and illegal legislation was introduced and passed in the Motu-Koitabu Assembly prior to the 2012 election for political reasons.
I feel sad my father is not going to vote because he is regarded an outsider.
My other siblings and I and our mother, a Motuan, are allowed to vote.
I now humbly request the Minister for Inter-Government Relations and Electoral Commissioner to intervene and sort out this highly-immoral and discriminatory voter eligibility legislation at Motu-Koita Assembly,

Motu Hapkas
