Move uncalled for: Official

THE election of Trade Union Congress (TUC) president John Paska to represent the workers’ union in the United Labour Party (ULP) is not right, says a political party official.
Pangu Party Inc national president Patrick Pundao, during a press conference yesterday, added that the move was uncalled for.
Pundao said it had politicised the TUC which should not be the case for any union – both in the public or private sector.
“I, therefore, call on John Paska to immediately step down as the president of the Trade Union Congress,” he said.
“One of the reasons is that he is enticing the workforce and the public and private sector associations into joining the United Labour Party. One very clear example is the Nurses Association.
“It is a public sector organisation and it cannot be affiliated into any political parties.
“Hence, they have failed to understand and know they have been affiliated into political parties.
“For these reasons, to secure and safeguard the best interest of the public and private sector unions, we have to take back the Trade Union Congress from luring them into politics.
“The unions represent a workforce with an interest to serve the people and implement the government’s policies and not to play politics and contest elections unless and when they resign.”
