THE people of New Ireland’s Namatanai will, for the first time since independence, be able to access news and updates through radio coverage, local MP Walter Schnaubelt says.
Schnaubelt, who is also Forests Minister, said Namatanai had been absent from radio coverage for more than 40 years.
“The Namatanai development authority’s decision to support and install a radio transmitter to cover the electorate have been approved,” he said.
Schnaubelt said this during the presentation of a cheque for K300,000 to the management of National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) in the presence of Communication and Information Technology Minister Timothy Masiu to set up the frequency modulation (FM) transmitter.
He said the district made the money available to allow the NBC to exhibit a FM transmitter radio signal within the district.
“We are going to have the whole district covered with a medium wave transmitter to access local news from NBC Kavieng to the rest of the province by December,” he said.
Masiu said the dissemination of information (news) to the people was important.
He said the people in Namatanai had missed out for a long time to listen to their leaders and know what was in the province and the rest of the country.
