HIRI-Koiari MP Keith Iduhu says the decline in the management of the country over the years has led to many socio-economic problems.
“Unfortunately, over the past few years, there has been a gradual erosion in the rule of law and the deterioration of independent institutions that ensure the separation and balance of powers between the different arms of government,” the Hiri-Koiri MP said in a statement.
“I do not condone the tragic events of Jan 10, but the unrest speaks volumes about the frustrations of our people and demonstrates that the masses are aware of what is not happening in our country.
“Our children are graduating each year without jobs to go to.
“University graduates are uncertain of their future, degree holders are now unemployed looking for any means necessary to earn a living.
“A job is now a precious commodity.
“It is a fact that the Government has caused our economy to shrink as it has not encouraged any new investment over the last five years.
“Our professionals are returning to their villages as the public service positions are being filled by relatives of senior public servants and politicians.
“We are losing experienced people in our once independent institutions of government, and nothing is being done to correct this.
“We all know there is an inner circle of those holding on to power, but the question is why are we letting them continue to plunder our resources?” he said.
Iduhu said he had joined the Government in the hopes of delivering change but the current state of the country’s affairs led him to join the Opposition.
“I initially joined the Government fresh out of elections hoping to instigate change from within, unfortunately over time, it became clear to me that some of us were there just for numbers.
“It became evident to me that unless you sacrifice your people’s interest, your dignity and your values, you will not go far in Government.
“You must praise and worship the leaders at the top if you want to see progress.
“As a first-term MP, my goal when contesting the elections was to serve my people with diligence and dignity, unafraid of any repercussions,” he said.
