MORESBY South MP Justin Tkatchenko donated seven lawnmowers to Taurama Barracks on Wednesday.
Commanding officer (CO) of the First Royal Pacific Island Regiment Lt Col Mark Kellerton was on hand to receive the equipment that would be used to maintain the barracks.
Tkatchenko said the barracks was a major installation in his electorate and thanked Lt Col Kellerton and his men for their service to the country.
He said he planned to upgrade the road to the barracks and also to maintain its hospital and school.
Kellerton said the lawnmowers would be distributed to the hospital, school and each company in the barracks to use.
He also thanked Tkatchenko for his support and pledged to work with the MP to see more changes at the barracks.
Tkatchenko also visited the barracks hospital with acting CO Major Louisa Wanma who said their biggest problem was the inconsistent water pressure which affected the facility’s operations.
She said the hospital had been one of the best performing hospitals in the country but because of a lack of major maintenance it was currently unable to provide a high standard of medical services.

  • Newspaper reporters must stop using the word “donate” when reporting on MPs using people’s money to buy material things for the people. Reporters must understand that the office of the MP is just a guardian of the people’s money. Any money they use from the people’s fund to buy something and present it to the people is not a donation unless they use their personal funds!
