A sports oval will soon be built to accommodate major carnivals in Kairuku-Hiri, thanks to local MP Peter Isoaimo.
He has pledged to upgrade the oval at Assiri village in the Vanapa-Brown River local-level government (LLG) area.
Isoaimo said during a recent sports carnival that the oval would also accommodate soccer and rugby league matches in a bid to identify and develop talents in the electorate.
“We will upgrade the oval to standard,” he said.
“I want a memorandum of understanding to be signed between councillors, LLG presidents and landowners so that we can erect a soccer and rugby league field to hold sports activities here.”
Isoaimo said he was ready to facilitate development in the community.
“But I need your participation and cooperation to work together in bringing about changes here.”
Asiri incorporated land group chairman Billy Airogo said sports were an effective tool in developing children, people and communities.
“Sports can promote peace, harmony and a better life,” he said.
“If we develop this place into a sports venue, more people will come to participate in major events in the electorate.”
Councillor John Jamaro said commended Isoaimo for the initiative.
“We can develop sportsmen and women here to represent our community, district and Central,” he said
“The new field will be enable youths to participate in sport activities and it will promote unity in the community.”
