SAMARAI-Murua MP Isi Henry Leonard says the reopening of the Misima airstrip is a relief for travelers.
“Public servants can now avoid the sea and, travel to and from, while businesses can now plan and travel to the district,” he said.
“It also makes it easy for people to travel to Alotau or Port Moresby.” Leonard said Misima’s mining project would also benefit from the reopening of the airstrip.
The airstrip was closed early this year due to drainage issues after heavy rainfall.
It was reopened late last month.
PNG Air has since resumed its flights on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
“So now people no longer need to come to Alotau and board a boat, they can travel from Port Moresby to Misima and back,” Leonard said.
“The mining programme in Misima is very promising, because they will be reopening the former pit.
“So it will be a lot more bigger than the Woodlark mine, there is potential in gold mining prospect in Misima.
“I told my people that we are very fortunate to have two impact resource-based economic project Woodlark and Misima) in our district.”
“I also told them that I will support those projects so that we bring these projects into production, we can realise the gain in terms of employment, royalties, occupation fees, compensation, and any other benefits that will come from the projects.
“The important thing is it will generate the much needed revenue that will help to the Government through the agreements.”
