MP speaks against unfair treatment

VIOLENCE against women and girls of Central and Papua New Guinea should not be taken lightly, Rigo MP Lekwa Gure says.
Speaking at a protest march against the continuous harassment, rape and killing of Central women and men in the National Capital District (NCD) to Parliament yesterday, Gure said this was the third march against gender-based violence that he had attended in a space of three weeks in Central and NCD.
“This was an issue that was presented in Parliament by the special parliamentary committee on gender-based violence,” he said.
“Some of our women and girls have been abducted, harassed, sexually violated and killed on our own land.
“We, Central people, have been marginalised on our own land.”
Gure said much of the problem of crime and disorder had come about because of land-grabbing, which had caused the growth of squatter settlements and unplanned or unsanctioned developments around the city and these had become breeding grounds for criminals and perpetrators of violence.
