Obura-Wonenara MP Mehrra Kipefa says there should be a scheme to buy back guns that are in the possession of the public.
“There are many guns in the hands of the public and is causing many law and order problems. So the government should consider buying back guns and send youths in possession of these guns to go for police training,” Kipefa said.
He said the office of the police commissioner was not in touch with police officers in remote districts. “Most times communication between a lone officer from, let’s say, in Marawaka does not reach Konedobu. So how can a lone officer be fully resourced in combating law and order in his area of operation?”
Kipefa said there needed to be four regional police training centres so that youths from within the region could be recruited and trained. They could return and enforce law and order in their provinces, he said.
