Police accused of selling services to complainants

Central Bougainville MP Sam Akoitai says police are now commercialising their services to the complainants to enforce law and order.
“They will ask complainants to provide money for fuel for their vehicles to attend to their complaints,” Akoitai said.
“They even go to the extent of requesting for hired cars and cash from complainants.
“We need to know why police officers are requesting money for fuel?
“Are we supporting the police officers with necessary funds so they do not ask the ordinary people for money because we MPs can afford to assist the police officers with fuel to attend to our complaints.
“But what about the ordinary villagers? I heard it many times and I’m sorry.
“I’m beginning to think that police officers are commercialising their duties.”
Akoitai said that police needed to check on public motor vehicles to see that they were road worthy to carry passengers, especially in Port Moresby.
“These PMVs are always overcrowded. They need to be inspected to check their road worthiness to avoid accidents.”
