MPs need debate skills

Letters

BEAR in mind, MPs are elected to represent people and to discuss and debate on issues affecting their electorate and the country as a whole.
What I’m interested here is on debating – what most MPs fail to fulfil during question time on the floor of parliament.
It seems to me that our MPs don’t know what debating is.
Most issues that MPs elevate during question time always ends with an obvious reply by the responsible minister: “My department will look into this issue”.
Though it’s an assurance most MPs find satisfying without further questioning, this is not what debating is.
Debating is all about throwing critical questions one after another which require lengthy, solid and detailed responses.
Such assurances by ministers has left issues in electorates and the country unattended for the past years.
PNG has passed its 44th independence anniversary. It’s time we change our mindset and focus more on issues that remain unsolved.
Remember, debating draws attention thus it is better to draw attention on issues and finding solutions before it gets out of hand.
