PRIME Minister James Marape says the passing of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) Bill yesterday showed unity among MPs.
Marape said politicians were often accused of corruption but they all supported the anti-corruption legislation yesterday.
“The organic law will be fully established. The institutions we set up must be truly resilient and stand the test of time, away from politics, favouritism and personalisation,” he said.
“Commissioners will be overseas-based (lawyers) recruited in an independent process.”
He said the bill had been discussed and reviewed over the years and finally became law yesterday.
Deputy Prime Minister Sam Basil said people needed to have confidence in the Government.
“ICAC has a broader range and scope of operation. We will support it and make sure it becomes a reality,” Basil said.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Trade Patrick Pruaitch called it a “new dawn for PNG”.
“I look forward to working with colleague leaders to ensure this bill gets into operation,” Pruaitch said.
Minister for Commerce and Industry William Duma welcomed the formation of the commission.
