Mt Hagen will host the national amateur championships at Kagamuga’s 18-hole golf course this weekend, starting tomorrow.
Club president Max Kumbamong said yesterday that more than 200 golfers were expected to take part in the four-day event.
He said the tournament would be used to choose the best junior and senior players to represent the country.
He said Port Moresby, Lae, Madang, Jiwaka, and Mt Hagen were expected to field golfers.
Kumbamong said last year’s junior champion Terrence Coleman, who lives in Vanuatu, was expected to return to defend his title.
He said that Essar Construction and City Pharmacy Limited Group gave K30,000 and K25,000 respectively to support the championships.
Kumbamong said the course had been upgraded by former representative golfer and Hagen Club life member Joe Moka.
“With the good sponsorship, my committee and local players plan to make the titles competitive and enjoyable for all players and officials,” Kumbamong said.
Kumbamong said K20,000 worth of prizes would be given away.
