Mt Ulawun erupts again with lava flowing from new vent

MT ULAWUN in West New Britain erupted for the third time in five months with lava flowing from a new vent at 3am yesterday.
Villagers near the volcano have been warned of the risk of mud flows during rainy periods due to the heavy deposit of volcanic ash from the eruptions, according to an official volcanological observatory bulletin.
The eruptions on June 26 and Aug 3, as well as the latest yesterday, deposited a significant amount of ash and scoria on the upper slopes of Ulawun the volcano and, to a lesser extent, in downwind areas.
The warning of potential mudflows during periods of heavy rain is still current.
The mudflow could become hazardous in low laying areas downstream. People in the northwest and northern areas from the volcano were told to be aware of this potential hazard.
Meanwhile, Ulamona Observatory worker Herman Volele believed the latest eruption was stronger than the last two.
