PROJECTS worth millions of Kina in Lae are taking shape after funding have been made available, Deputy Prime Minister Sam Basil says.
He said the Japan International Corporation Agency-funded Nadzab International Airport project was now underway.
Costing almost K900 million, the Nadzab International Airport will be extended by 500 meters, plus the upgrading of airport facilities including a bigger terminal.
Basil, the Minister for National Planning and Monitoring, said the Wagang wharf construction was also in the pipeline.
“The K90 million road upgrade from 9-Mile to Yalu Bridge on the Lae-Nadzab road has been approved by the Government and construction is underway,” he said.
It is the second phase of the four-lane Lae-Nadzab road redevelopment project.
He said the extension of the road from Yalu Bridge to Nadzab Airport was the third major project under the Exim Bank of China.
It is into the final stages of preparations.
Basil said they were working with Lae MP John Rosso to find an affordable and cheaper source of power for Lae.
He was at the opening of the Gobe Haus in Lae owned by the Mineral Resource Development Corporation (MRDC) at the cost of K26.5 million.
Rosso thanked the MRDC for its investment in Lae.
He also said the law and order situation in the city had so far been brought under control.
