A WOMAN was transported across the Markham River last weekend to the Markham Farm from where she was taken to Angau.
She was having birth complications.
The 24-year-old woman from Mare village went into labour at 11pm on Friday and gave birth to twin boys.
Complication occurred when her second baby was retained. The woman was carried by relatives and locals to look for help.
Kipuo Luther, a relative of the mother, was contacted at 3am on Saturday morning to help them.
“They called me around 3am and I told them to carry her and cross over the Markham River to the Markham Farm,” Luther said.
She said the mother was transported on a homemade stretcher by local men and women who placed her on a dugout canoe and swam across the river towing the canoe.
“I notified Sr Narowen on Saturday morning and we made our way up to Markham Farm where we met them at the edge of the plantation at 8am,” Luther said.

“She was placed on the ground while Sr Narowen attended to her and cut the umbilical cord of the first twin,” Luther said.
She said that the second of the twin was retained and they had to rush the mother to Angau Memorial Provincial Hospital on Saturday morning.
“She was dehydrated and was not getting contractions since going into labour the night before,” Narowen said.
The second of the twin was born at 11am.
Narowen confirmed that the identical twin boys were born healthy and were discharged on Monday.
Mare village has an aid post that is currently out of medical supplies and drugs to treat patients. Damaged bridges and roads make travel difficult.
Markham Farm is located 40 miles away from Lae city and can be accessed through the Okuk Highway.
