MUNGKAS returned to the top of the Port Moresby Soccer Association’s Premier League with a 1-0 win over Central’s Keleruina at the Bisini Soccer Grounds on Saturday.
Mungkas coach David Passam, pictured, said the win was a result of a lot of effort put in training last week.
Passam said all his players stood up to the challenge on game day, which resulted in July Elijah scoring the match winner in the first half.
Mungkas then defended well against a Keleruina side known for fast, attacking football.
“They were very direct as usual but credit to the players for keeping our defence tight throughout the game,” Passam said.
“We were prepared well for the game.
“We talked about it all week and we delivered.
“We had some chances to score more goals, but they’re a strong side and that’s why they gave us a really good challenge.”
Keleruina coach Ivah Olemau said Mungkas were the better team on the day. “Unfortunately, one team has to win and Mungkas have shown that they were the better side on the day,”Olemau said.
“They taught our players how it really feels to play at this level and that is something we need to think about and work hard on, especially in pressure games like this.
“They scored early in the first 10 minutes through a deflection off our defenders.
“We had five chances on goals but all the shots were off target.”
In other Premier League match on Saturday, PS Ruts thrashed Momase 5-0. Papua New Guinea representative and Lae City Dwellers striker Obert Bika was instrumental for PS Ruts, scoring three goals.
In yesterday’s games, Maclaren beat Cosmos 4-2 while FC Genesis and University Inter FC played out a 0-0 draw.
