Mungkas maintain pole spot despite draw with University

MUNGKAS 1 have maintained their pole spot in the men’s Pool C despite coming off a scoreless draw against University SC in yesterday’s clash of the Port Moresby Soccer Association preseason competition.
Both sides had chances to score in both halves of the game but couldn’t convert their chances into goals as they walked off sharing a point each.
Meanwhile in the women’s clash, University triumphed with a 2-0 shutout of the ladder-leaders Finance, while Murat and Mungkas were locked nil-all at fulltime.
Mungkas applied pressure on the University defence in the second half, coming close to scoring multiple times but defenders led by Carlos Onne and Nathan Eko put up a fight to keep them at bay, while goal keeper Rolly Lanta showed class to save multiple shots at goal.
University forwards Moyap Peter, Arthur Wazami and Richard Alois worked up combinations up front to put their side in the lead but their shots were thwarted.
Mungkas on the other hand aimed to capitalise on their star-studded combinations of Basil Jofari, Terence Sakuk and Eaka Philemon with assistance from Abel Redenut and Clement Willis, but University’s defence proved stronger.
Meanwhile, in the Pool A clash, City Strikers dominated over Vesubeai Aupa to come off with a 3-0 win while Bismarck-Torosel edged Bosco Souths 2-0. Lower division clubs who are playing in the same pools as premier divisions have been giving the latter a run for their money with improved performances over the last three weeks of matches.
Competition coordinator Peter Mathew said the challenge was getting competitive every weekend and they were anticipating an increased momentum in the next few weeks as teams fight for the top four spots in each pool.
