Murder suspect arrested

POLICE and soldiers have arrested a suspect involved in the murder of a police sergeant and wounding others in Hela’s Tokyo Bridge last month.
According to Tari police, the suspect was arrested with the help of Papua New Guinea Defence Force men on Thursday.
Police had received information from villagers on the whereabouts of the suspect who was nabbed while he was enjoying and consuming alcoholic drinks with a group of men.
Hela police commander Chief Insp Teddy Augwi confirmed the arrest and that the suspect was now held in the Tari police station lock-up.
Sgt David Hale, the second-in-command of the Mobile Squad Nine in Hela, was killed in Tokia/Kuparo Village on Oct 15.
Sgt Hale, 45, and three policemen were escorting the Hela provincial government administrator when they were ambushed by more than 70 men from Tokia/Kuparo Village, who were armed with guns and bush knives.
The assailants blocked the road at about 3pm, disarmed the policemen and shot Sgt Hale.
Constable James Kobol was seriously injured and was sent to Port Moresby for medical treatment.
