MURRAY Barracks hosted a military wives sports tournament last week with six Port Moresby-based units competing in the three-day event.
Coordinator Margaret Bare told The National that the initiative was aimed at helping the wives of army personnel to network and support each other through sports.
“We have up to six units which are Goldie, Air Transport Wing (ATW), Taurama, the Navy (Basilisk), and two from the Murray barracks force support battalion,” the women’s club representative said.
“The initiative behind the games came from a handful of wives at the ATW, Taurama and Murray Barracks in 2012 which was when the first games were held. The games have always been a success.
“The only time we couldn’t host the games was last year due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but we’re grateful to obtain approval for the event.
“We have up to 12 teams competing this year.
“This is for us to have games during the Independence celebrations.” Bare said the theme for this year’s tournament was “unit pride and force unity”.
“The tournament is basically focused on bringing out women who are military wives and fielding them in friendly tournaments,” she said.
“This fosters good relationship between wives from the different units.”
