THE next generation of footballers — through proper guidance — have the potential to help the country qualify for a World Cup, says Papua New Guinea international and Hekari United veteran David Muta.
During the recent launching of Hekari’s school of excellence, the midfielder said proper guidance at an early age would make a difference in the type of players the country produced.
“For some time, PNG players have been struggling and we want to achieve big things in the country and region,” Muta said.
“But nothing much has happened so what are we going to do to fix that?
“This is the time for change and we have to start with the kids because we’ve been trying to start with the big people, but they haven’t been able to take us anywhere.
“We have to try with the kids and maybe these kids will take us to the World Cup and we can do this by teaching them the proper way of training and playing football.
“Players after us are different, so we have to train and talk to them in order for them to understand what coaches want. Most of the things we will be teaching are the basics and that’s going to make a big difference to the players of tomorrow.
“We’re passing on the message to this group of upcoming kids that nothing is impossible, you can become someone in the sport.”
Hekari school of excellence founder and franchise manager Vonnie Kapi Natto said the concept would push to develop technical players while helping them adopt a professional attitude.
