LAST weekend’s inaugural Nakmai Sevens was hailed a success after the rugby tournament attracted 26 teams at the Lugagun Rugby Grounds in Kavieng, New Ireland.
Kavieng Urban team Luvurao won the Cup and K4,000 in prize money ahead of runners-up Madina Hawks who walked away with K2,000 for their efforts.
In attendance were Nakamai managing director William Boas, provincial government representatives, including youth, women and sports chairman Byron Chan, and other stakeholders.
The tournament is part of New Ireland’s rugby union development programme aimed at promoting and developing the sport by identifying local talents to push for national selection.
“Although a household sport in New Ireland, rugby union has regressed,” Boas said.
“New Irelanders once dominated rugby union so we need to revive the sport.”
Tournament director Charlie Melachon commended the teams for demonstrating good sportsmanship throughout the event.
The local community was also commended for its cooperation.
Meanwhile, plate winners Lugagun Fandas pocketed K1,500 and K1,000 went to runners-up Munawai Ditals.
Bowl winners Luvurao 2 won K850 and runners-up Konos Brothers collected K650.
Shield winners Luapul Cowboys pocketed K500 and K300 went to runners-up Baum Storm.
Trophy winners Laks Bay bagged K250 and runners-up Turangau Cruiser collected K200.
