GETTING youths to participate in sports is one way of keeping them away from illicit activities, according to an official.
Original Imua Volleyball Association patron Baea Motu said that during their finals at Imuagoro village in Rigo, Central, on Saturday.
He said there were men’s and women’s finalists in the A, B and C grades.
Beae, who is also a sponsor of the association, provided K3,000 to pay for cash prizes and other expenses.
For the A grade, Ori Four (men) and Ori Three (women) beat Ori Three and Ori One respectively to pocket K400 each while the runners-up received K300 each.
Both B-grade winners bagged K300 each while the runners-up pocketed K200 each.
The C-grade winners walked away with K200 each while the runners-up received K100 each.
Baea said he was looking forward to a bigger and better tournament next year “as it keeps youths away from illicit activities”.
“I have chosen to sponsor volleyball over rugby league and netball because the sport involves less physical contact,” he said.
“Our villagers usually play rugby league and netball, so I chose to sponsor volleyball to expose talents.”
