THE National Narcotics Bureau responsible for monitoring and controlling the movement of drugs is now a branch of the Department of Justice and Attorney General.
Department Secretary Lawrence Kalinoe, pictured, said the bureau was formerly under the Prime Minister’s Department until May 10, 2016.
“We are now reviewing it. We now have eight officers out of more than 50 reporting to work due to lack of office space,” Kalinoe said.
He said once an office is secured, all staff will be required to be at work.
Meanwhile, Kalinoe said he was not aware of a National Court order to reinstate a terminated senior NNB officer Felix Oltomo.
Oltomo was terminated as the Awareness and Public Relations Assistant Director by the then NNB acting director-general Mathew Nelson in 1998 on disciplinary grounds.
However, the National Court had ordered NNB to reinstate Oltomo in 2009 and 2011 after he twice successfully sought a judicial review of his termination.
Despite these Court orders Oltomo was still not on pay roll prompting his lawyer Zacchary Gelu to write to Secretary Kalinoe to reinstate Oltomo on the payroll.
