THE world-renowned National Geographic will be film the 63rd annual Goroka Show.
Show chairman Keryn Hargreaves confirmed that a crew from NatGeo would capture live coverage and send images to their respective stations around the world.
“I was told that the transmission of images of activities of the show will reach astronauts in the space, that means the Goroka show will be watched in the outer space – this is amazing,” she said. Hargreaves said images captured by the NatGeo crew of performers and goers would not only be broadcast but also uploaded on their site.
Hargreaves also confirmed Fijian group Doki Doki would also feature at the amphitheatre during the Sept 14-15 event.
Among the performers would be NZK from Nondugl, Jiwaka, and Goroka’s Apo Mix among others.
“Doki Doki will also perform at the show’s ball night at the Bird of Paradise Hotel on Saturday,” she said.
Hargreaves said Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae had also confirmed his attendance as a guest of honour at the official opening on Saturday morning.
Hargreaves said the show would begin with a Pikinini Show on Friday (Sept 13) that would see young performers present in traditional dress as well as schools and others from the community.
“The hausman (men’s house) will be a spectacular highlight where elderly village craftsmen and traditionally skilled men will be teaching young boys the traditional skills of bow and arrow making, bamboo flute making, playing, making head dresses just to name a few activities,” she said.
She said the show was a great opportunity to promote local cultures and practices and teach the younger generations to be proud of their culture, art, history and people.
