THE Papua New Guinea Volleyball Federation Inc has organised beach volleyball trials this weekend in Port Moresby.
Federation president Kila Dick said teams were selected last year and this year to undergo a final selection trial on Saturday and Sunday at the Sir John Guise sports complex beach volleyball courts from 9am to 5pm.
“What will happened is that players will be paired differently so that we can see which pairs perform consistently and maintain a good standard,” Dick said.
“These trials are very important as the PNG Volleyball Federation is preparing its beach volleyball team for the upcoming Oceania beach volleyball championship from the Dec 15-21.
“This is a very important championship that PNG will attend as this is competition is also gearing us up towards the preparation of the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa next year.
“We will be sending two men’s and two women’s teams so to the championship so that we can gauge their performance at major international events.
Dick said PNG men’s pair Richard Kilarupa and Moha Mea won gold at the last Pacific Games and the Mini Games and were the current number one pair in the Pacific and it was incumbent on the federation to develop the next pair of champions.
Dick said Kilarupa had come out of retired to help the sport.
“We’re looking forward to Richard’s comeback. He is a great player and having him back is a bonus for the many young players that are coming through beach volleyball.”
