PORT Moresby National High School is ready to set standards in new science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem).
School principal David Diowai told The National that he was prepared to take up whatever challenges there were as this was a new development by the Government to boost the country’s human resources and technical skills.
“This country has a lot of resources and for us to be able to develop them properly and export and do downstream processing in the country, we need a lot of technically qualified specialists,” he said.
The school, this year, started with one class of 40 grade 11 students taking applied English, advance mathematics, engineering, physics, chemistry and biology.
“These students are the top students academically in the class and our aim is to maintain the focus and for us to be the first to set the legacy and others can follow,” Diowai explained.
“PNG is a country that is consuming a lot of technical products produced by other countries and it’s time to start developing and producing technical people in the country as well.”
He said there were funding issues at present, but to get qualified teachers, they needed to start now.
