National Planning summit

Letters

THIS letter is in reference to presentations during the National Planning and Consultative Summit held in Lae last week.
National Government and in particular Richard Maru, the Minister for National Planning, must be commended for initiating such a workshop to plan the way forward.
There are some lessons I want to highlight that the country needs to review in order to progress.
The first issue of our economic progress the Government needs to measure are good manufacturing practices (GMP) as well as the bgross domestic product (GDP).
Why GMP?
The reason is that the country’s real growth should be measured in GMP.
This is because GMP measures PNG-owned businesses rather than all businesses operating in the country.
This means that foreign-owned mines are excluded.
This will also get the Government to focus on growing PNG’s very own business.
One very-inspiring presentation came from the CEO of Fiji Power Ltd, a state-owned enterprise.
