THE Nawaeb development authority (DDA) yesterday presented a cheque for K100,000 to the management of Kamkumung market for the development to the facility.
Nawaeb MP and DDA chairman Kennedy Wenge, when presenting the cheque, said the DDA would give another K50,000.
“This money will go towards building toilets, showers and sinks which market users can access when using the facility,” he said.
Wenge said the initiative was in line with the DDA’s aim to develop and support small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
He thanked Kamkumung market management, under the chairmanship of Samson Timson, for their initiative to construct a market building with support from Atlas Steel.
Kamkumung market, in ward 16 of the Ahi local level government, is part of Nawaeb.
With the development of the market, now it will become one of the main source of revenue generation for the urban settlers and the landowners.
Wenge said with the Covid-19 surge in the province and the district, facilities needed to be made with fixtures that would improve health and cleanliness. Timson said the money was timely and would be paid to the contractor to start work.
Ahi LLG president Malcolm Kalo said the district had a plan in place to support SMEs and the presentation of the cheque to Kamkumung market was one of the many that the DDA was looking at.
He said the other need for the district was to have its isolation centres in each LLG.
“We need this facility as many times people in the district go to the main one in Lae and sometimes services are delayed.”
